Physics of Animal Behavior

hummingbird

Overview

Many teachers use birds to teach about biology and environmental science, but did you realize that animal behavior is a great way to introduce physical science standards as well? Topics you could explore include why and how birds make sound, pigments, iridescence and structural color, the forces of flight, and migration.

We worked with experts at the Center for Nanoscale Systems Institute for Physics Teachers and Wayne-Finger Lakes Board of Cooperative Educational Services to develop lessons using animal sounds and videos to enhance understanding of physics.
