Guidelines for attribution of Macaulay Library media

General Media Use

If you plan on using Macaulay Library assets, they should be credited using the following guidelines.

Required: Contributor name and “Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology”

     Example: Mark B. Robbins/Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology    

Variant: “Cornell Lab of Ornithology” may be shortened to “Cornell Lab” if a hyperlink is provided to the Macaulay Library (macaulaylibrary.org)

Citations in scientific publications

Media from the Macaulay Library are routinely used in publications in scientific journals. If you reference Macaulay Library assets in your publication, please use the following guidelines.

Citation of a single catalog number

  • Species (ML #####)
  • Example: Rhinocrypta lanceolata (ML 217147)

Citation of numerous recordings at the end of a publication

  • “The following recordings from the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology were used: #####, #####, #####, etc.”
  • Example: “The following recordings from the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology were referenced: 12645, 33245, 23567, 45678."
  • If you are using a large number of assets and it is not practical to include them all in the main body of the publication, please include a full list in the appendix.

  • “The Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology”

When possible, link to the Macaulay Library home page or specimen page
