NOTES: CATERWAULING; DEEP GROWLS; DEEPER AND COARSER THAN WEDGE-TAILED SHEARWATERS IN KERMADEC AND HAWAIIAN IS. SEVERAL ADULTS RECORDED WHILE IN OR NEAR BURROWS. NEST BURROWS ARE IN SOIL BETWEEN ROCKS ON THIS ROCKY PROMONTORY ABOVE THE SEA. EXPERIMENTED WITH BARE MICROPHONE NEAR THE BIRDS (WITHOUT PARABOLA) TO REDUCE THE SURF NOISE. THE MUFFLED SOUND OF SOME BIRDS APPARENTLY COMES FROM THOSE UNDERGROUND.
