NOTES: General climate: CYCLIC WET-DRY; Weather: WIND; VOCALIZATIONS MAY BE DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF A LUHDER'S BUSH SHRIKE; THEY WERE OFTEN ALMOST ON THE SAME BRANCH. RESPONSE TO PLAYBACK WAS IMMEDIATE - THE BIRD APPEARED AT THE OUTER EDGE OF THE TREE. THE MALE REMAINED FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND WOULD APPEAR EACH TIME I PLAYED BACK, GIVING A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT PHRASES OR SOUNDS. BIRD'S THROAT MOVED ALOT WHEN VOCALIZING. THE BIRD WAS PHOTOGRAPHED.TOWARDS THE EVENING THERE WERE TWO BIRDS, A MALE AND A FEMALE I THINK. AT ONE TIME THE MALE FLEW LOW OVER THE RECORDIST AND MACHINE. THE BIRD IS PROBABLY RARE IN THE AREA AND ITS PRESENCE MAY BE DUE TO THE BLOOM OF A TREE WHICH BLOSSOMS ONCE EVERY 14 YEAR WITH THE RESULT BEING THE PRESENCE OF INSECTS. RECORDED EARLY AFTERNOON TO EVENING.

ML: Background subject changed from recordist's original identification of Pycnonotus barbatus tricolor to Pycnonotus barbatus [tricolor Group] to conform to eBird Taxonomy (v. 1.55). -Jay McGowan/Matt Medler, July 2015.
