NOTES: IN THE PRESENT CASE I SAW THE BIRD FLY AWAY FROM THE BUSH I WAS AIMING AT,BUT I NEVER SAW THE BIRD ACTUALLY SINGING, AS IT ALWAYS KEEPS STILL AND SKULKS DEEP IN A BUSH WHEN IT SINGS. IN FACT, I WAS ONLY SATISFIED WHEN I PLAYED THE RECORDING OVER FOR J.P. CHAPIN, WHO POSITIVELY IDENTIFIED IT AS THIS SPECIES. FOR THE QUESTION WHETHER IT IS A SHRIKE OR A BULBUL, SEE THE DISCUSSION IN 'MORE VOICES OF AFRICAN BIRDS' (FOR WHICH AN EXTRACT WAS COPIED). IT SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF THOSE SKULKING GREENBULS TO ME. ML: Subject changed from Nicator chloris to N. gularis to reflect current taxonomy. -Matt Medler, 22 Oct 2013.
