NOTES: Recordist's notes at beginning of recording: Thus the intimidator display of the adult orang-utan consists of a great variety of noises, "kiss-squeaks" and different combinations of "grumphs", "gawkums", "loks", with clomping, and branch shaking and body shaking and posturing, turning away the face, and quite complex calls that consist of combinations and intermediates between these. And individuals have their particular quircks - some, the grumphs are more like humphs deeper in the throat; some have curious little weezes; others miss out some parts and use lots of "loks", others use "gawkums", etc. The actual vocabulary may be meaningless, tho, I am struck by the resemblance of such phrases as, for instance... [then the animal sound, LNS 82029] [compared] with that uttered by another orang-utan on a different occasion, namely... [then the animal sound].
