NOTES: (Background Sounds: wind in aspens; Species Sound: infrequent; Social Contact: family?, colony?; Breeding Status: not territorial, not breeding; Behavioral Context: advertising?, mate contact?; Sound Delivery Rate: low; General Climate: arid; Cover Density: sparse; Strata in Habitat: both low flight and high flight noted) Some six to eight Lewis' Woodpeckers were hawking insects from the tops of the large oaks and Jeffrey Pines in the ravine. Three or four individuals seemed to prefer the one oak tree where this recording was made. Vocalizations were mainly given just as a bird was returning to the tree, or changing perches in the tree.

[This cut contains primarily sharp "Alarm" Calls (following Bock et al. 1971, BNA), which are typically given right at the beginning of each part of the recording 0:05-0:06, 0:32-0:37, 1:16, 1:42. 1:53, and 2:03-2:05. There is also a series of twittering notes (0:54-0:56; possibly a series of "Alarm" Calls?) and two "Churr" calls followed by "Alarm" Calls (1:19-1:25; the first "Churr" was decapitated) and some tapping (1:27-1:31). Quality added (2-1, 2) - CAM - 9 December 2004]
