NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #81. Bulk reel #523
Weather: Cloudy, bright.
a) Bird #1. One natural song phrase and some calls. Quality: 3. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. 203 tape. LN.
"Female-plumaged" bird with no visible indication of adult male plumage. It is presumably a first-year male. Its behavior (alarm calls, not too strong territorial reaction) suggested an active nest although I couldn't locate it.
b) Bird #1, later, after some playback: song. Quality: 1-2. Level: +3.
Male in pied plumage, although mainly black. The breast looked as if it would be heavily mottled but was masked by light feathers.
c) Bird #2, natural song. Quality: 3. Level: +3.
Adult male. Heavily mottled on sides and apparently +/- heavily mottled on breast although it too appears to have mottling masked by light feathers.
d) Bird #3, song after playback. Quality: 3. Level: +3.
Seen, not recorded--adult male, very heaviily mottled and with strongly marked "tiger-striped" flanks.
Both [bird ##2 & 3] sang complex song naturally but much interference by villagers when I tried to record.
