NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #36. Bulk reel #514. 203 tape. Weather: Fair. This is the male of pair with nest under construction. a) 6:20 AM. Natural song. Sporophila nigricollis in background. Quality: 1. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. LN. b) 7:45 AM. Song by male. At this time the female is doing the nest construction; yesterday it was the male, but today he flies back and forth with the female, singing but not building; on one occasion both arrived together with material in bill but male, who was singing all the while, left with the female without going to nest. Quality: 1-. Level: +3. I noticed that when the male sings his bill is pretty widely opened, giving a good view of the inside (roof) of the mouth, which is a fairly bright magenta color and quite conspicuous. Note: Should graph song with bill open and with bill closed as a comparison for acoustics. c) 8:00 AM. Weather: Clear, fair. Natural song a little later. Quality: 1. Level: +3. (Voice note that female is doing the buildilng today; male only accompanies her.)
