a) 10 July 1973. 1750 to 1825 hours. Cloudy. Bird #1 - type 1. I was in the area from 4:00 PM. No Soisolas heard up to 5:40 PM, at which time I started walking through woods (trail through woods to south of the savanna area) whistling type 1 phrases. Soon a bird responded. It gradually came closer, but it did not come up really close and then began moving around somewhat and remains +/- behind obstacles.
With the singing of this bird, or just as likely with the adjoining hour, I then heard two other birds, both far away; one type 2 +/- normal and one type 1 with third figure cut short.
Then two phrases added, recorded ~ 2.5 min. later, after I'd walked ~ 1 km along trail and then come back again to this bird. Quality: 2 to 1-2. Level: +3. 203 tape. LN. Copied from N-4.2 to N-IV. Nagra SN recorder; AKG microphone; no parabola.
b) 11 July 1973. 6:50 AM. Weather: Fair. Probably same bird, next morning. (Apparently could never get a good straight-line focus, the bird singing always from behind some obstruction. Best phrases seem to be at ~45" and after ~ 1:25.) Quality: 1-2. Level: +3. 203 tape. LN. Nagra IV recorder; Sennheiser 405 microphone; 36" parabola.
c) 7:30 to 8:10 AM. Weather: Fair. Bird #2: Another bird, across the "corridor" in woods, (heard in background of part b) at end) (Note: the bird of c) may be different from this one [meaning the bird in background of part b)]; phrase is +/- type 1-2. However, quite like a Type 1 but the third figure is somewhat long and is inflected upward. Here, too, I had difficulty getting good focus. The best, and fairly good, are in last part (after 3:00). Just before these start, what was apparently this same bird gave ~ a type 3 phrase. This seems like one of the other phrases without the third figure. Quality: 2,"1-2." Level: +3.
