a) 17/8/74. 0600 & 0630. Cloudy, ~ bright. Flight displays. During this recording I "followed" the bird with the reflector sight as well as I could. When I arrived @ this spot ~ 5:15-5:30 PM bird was noticed in display and that session continued without the bird's coming to ground, so far as I noticed, for > 15'. After some minutes "rest" the bird produced another session, very short, perhaps 5-6 displays only. Then after some time it again began displaying for a fairly prolonged period; the recorded displays are of this session. (Those of earlier sessions were very noisy and not saved.) The dark bird again displayed even though there was no moon and it was essentially cloudy.
In its display the bird flew +/- randomly (first display period) back and forth and from side to side over an area 500-1000 m. long x some 300-400 m. wide. During the third display period the bird flew a more regular course in the form of a rough "oblong-rectangle" over the ~ same area as before, producing usually three displays during each circuit: bird flew +/- horizontally and straight (i.e. not zig-zag) line with constantly beating wings, then would fly downward @ slight angle for the display, veering up and turning at end. Quality: 2. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. LN.
b) 18/8/74. 0600. Cloudy. Pre-dawn flight display period: 2 (or 3?) birds heard. (Dark & birds not visible, therefore recording made randomly with "fixed focus.") Quality: 2. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. LN.
c) 18/8/74. 0700 & 0715. A later display period, probably by same bird as in a). 7:40 AM. Later displays probably by same bird. then some by a different bird, neighbor to east of other. Quality: 2+ to 2-. Level: +3. 3.75 & 7.5 ips. LN.
