NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 72. Bulk reel: 384
Noted definite change in light intensity in period 5:25-5:30 AM. First display heard between 5:35 and 5:40 AM.
In the display that occurred just before recording begins, the bird apparently gained altlitude during the display! (If so, this is not the usual case.)
a) 9/IV/73. 5:45 AM. Reflector focused on bird that just alighted after a display flight; quiet "ao" calls (and those by the male?; apparently so).
Then one partial ascending whistle and bird flew without displaying; after refocus on new position a second flight sound is heard. This may have been the female leaving.
Then ascending whistles and quiet "ao" calls. Then a display. In the display can hear that the bird flew a bit before beginning the display.
Misc. note: A bird @ km 16.5, shortly after dawn, 13/IV/73, was giving in series succession a loud call ("KI-uuu," i.e. a loud Ki followed by a "growl) that I've heard before mixed in with active conflict vocalizations. In the present case, it appeared to be given in a "danger" or alarm situation.
Quality: 2+. Level: +2. 203 tape. LN.
b) 10/IV/73. 5:40 AM. Same location.Very probably same birds as in a); this was the second display by this male (first at 5:35 AM) and it is answered by quiet talk, presumably by the female who is +/- in focus; the display is not. Quality: 2. Level: +2. Std. 139 (prob.) (brown tape).
Note: Operations then shifted to the birds at km 21.
