NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 49. Bulk reel: 381.
One display, saved as another example. Also some "ao" calls being given by other than the displaying bird. This was the only display heard in this immediate area but there were displays on all sides of me although farther away; also much calling. Tape 138. Quality: 2-3. Level: 0.
Note: 19/I/70 - "Pica a la Toma" on building side of the "portachuelito. I arrived @ 6:15 AM and found birds actively displaying; at least three birds giving displays, but no vocalizations. These three birds were fairly close to each other but each was in a definite place and in the various display flights did not cross into each other's "territory." The bird nearest me, hence the one best observed, was definitely displaying back and forth; perhaps a female was the focus of it, although I didn't see her. A week = 10/1/70 previously I had also found several birds displaying and one bird (only) also actively called "ao." At that time two birds actively displaying in same area to a third bird, apparently a female, was the "focus" of the displays (perhaps it was the female who called "ao"?) so that the displaying birds' flights were back and forth in ~ same area.
23/I/70 - same location as above - clear. Arrived 6:20 AM, already getting light and at that time heard one bird way above path give three displays and one bird near path but over @ "portachuelito" gave only one display. Last night full moon, so birds may have been displaying earlier. A little later, from the place of bird above the path I heard some "ao" calls, then a bird flew with a "flight scream." No more displays. Yesterday AM apparently the same two birds displayed, but heard no "ao" calls. Thus neither yesterday nor today was there the conglomeration noted 17/I/70.
30/I/70 - same location, clear. No activity noticed at all. For past few days much fog and consequent rain. All bird activity practically nil.
4/II/70 - Pica de la Toma - no activity on building side of "portachuelito" but considerable activity (calls and displays) over near the spring. Also one bird near the "portachuelito" did display several times, but no calls. However, from the distant birds there were some "crows." On 5 Feb no activity up this area, but down by bridge heard calls and later "crows," but no displays noted.
