NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 8. Bulk reel: 255
Weather: Fair.
a) 9:15 AM. There were four, and I believe only four, birds making up the colony on this tree: two males, two females.
Various vocalizations by birds of the group but I could seldom identify the individuals exactly due to height and light conditions. The long intervals of silence between vocalizations have been edited out.
These seem to be mostly "bother" calls.
The situation here at the colony is rather puzzling. There was one active nest with young. As well as I could observe it, this nest was attended exclusively (or almost so) by the intermediate female. On one occasion a male rubrifrons type did come to the branch with the active nest, even to the point of the hole but on the opposite side, but didn't go into the nest. On another occasion a female rubrifrons type did enter the nest hole. However the intermediate female came frequently and was certainly feeding the young and she seemed to associate very little with the other birds, which kept flying back and forth, pecking at tree, also apparently working on at least one other hole, or just sitting in the tree.
b) ~ 1:30 PM. About three hours before this one male and one female rubrifrons-type birds had been collected. These calls now recorded are +/- "normal song" and are by a rubrifrons-type male.
Then more, apparently by a rubrifrons male which was down near nest hole. Also some certainly by male; then more apparently by the intermediate female; then the two together but I couldn't be sure which, or if both, called. Quality: 1. Level: +5.
These two birds were then collected.
