NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 24. Bulk reel: 205. 8 May 1972. 5:30 AM. Arrived 5:10 AM, still dark; sky begins to lighten a bit @~5:20AM. First display @~5:30, fairly far up slope (between west and mid ridges) (not recorded). A few moments later a near bird @ foot of mid ridge where I was makes a peculiar flight sound: as if it were an "undecided" wing-drum flight display (a normal flight sound, probably by this same bird, can be heard in Cut 9 of Lurocalis semitorquatus). Quality: 1-2. Level: 0. 3.75 ips.
8 May 1972. 0540 AM. Then a few minutes later, some calls (apparently analogous to "20" of P. argyrotis}, then a "half-hearted" flight display. Quality: 1-2. Level: 0, +3. 3.75 ips.
8 May 1972. 0550 AM. Then, after a few minutes, more calls of the same kind (recorded @7.5ips) and eventually a display (just as a bus was passing!). Quality: 1-2. Level: +3. 7.5 ips.
The bird, after last recorded display, was on lower east ridge and after some minutes it gave a few more calls of the same type (not saved) then ~5 min. later, a bird on lower east slope began giving some
"bell calls" (~ 6:00 AM) (I don't think this was the same bird; perhaps a female?) Quality: 2. Level: +3. 7.5 ips.
8 May 1972. 6:15 AM. Then, having heard some "courtship growling", I pointed reflector in that direction and first are heard some "bell calls", then a short bit of "courtship growling." I could not see birds now due to intervening foliage but I'm pretty sure two birds were there and suspect the two voice types mentioned were by different members of a pair. Quality: 2. Level: +3. 7.5 ips.
Field note says bird's dewlap was large and quite visible with shape similar that I drew for Amadon for P. argyrotis but more rounded. It was bright red, on orangish side, and hung down and shook from side to side as bird moved its head while feeding
The bird was here feeding on some fruit in a large tree. I watched it for some minutes; then it apparently became aware of me and flew a short distance out of sight.
[The following note was written on the data sheet for Cuts 17 and 18 Reel 3, LNS 64000 and 64001.] NOTE: 23/VII/69 - Km 36+ - Present from 5:25AM. No sign of guan activity by this species, nor by P. argyrotis (which would not be expected here, esp. at this time of year), except 1 short burst of bother calls @5:45AM. *All bird activity* very reduced; Only Ciccaba huhula more or less continuously active vocally @ dawn; C. virgata heard once.
