NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 21. Bulk reel: 205. Two displays, apparently by two different birds. Quality: 2. Level: +10. 15 Jan 1969, Rancho Grande, km 35+, cloudy. On site at 5:45 AM. Up through 6:20 AM I observed no display nor other activity. ~ 6:22 I heard one display from up ~ junction of the west and mid ridges. Then ~ 6:25 there were two displays, apparently by two different birds and note that the second is not really typical for it has the second "half" of the display shorter than the first "half," which in itself is longer than the normal first "half" usually heard here. These also were up near where the first was heard. Bill Koatz said he heard a display ~ 3' before this but I didn't hear it nor did it record. (The one I heard did record but only faintly, so not saved.) Then ~ 3' later there is another display (similar in form to the first in above recording). Quality: 2. Level: +10.
Then some of the "growl" courtship talk is heard; then another display even farther up the hill. (This last might be of P. argyrotis, for shortly after there were calls from this species from that area.) Quality: 2-3. Level: +10. Note: 26 June 1969. Clear with thin, high haze. Arrived at km 35+ at 5:15 AM. Up to 5:45 AM there had been no activity by any birds, neither the guans, T. tao, Ciccaba spp., O. guatemalae, etc. Later the two Ciccaba spp. were heard briefly. Absolutely no guan activity. 27 June 1969 - At km 35+ I did notice a little guan activity at dawn, as well as of T. tao and both Ciccabas. 28 June 1969. Clear. At km 36+ at 5:20 AM (first blush of light at ~5:15 AM). A few displays of the guan from 5:37 to 5:50 AM, all far; no vocal sounds heard. 30 June 19l69 - same place. 5:15 to 6:00 AM - no guans.
