NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 27. Bulk reel: 108
a) 6:30 AM. Song, possibly in reaction to whistled imitation. Quality: 2-. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. LN.
b) Song, almost certainly ditto. Quality: 2-. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. LN.
When I heard the birds first sing, not confident that I'd be able to record them, I began practicing whistling the song in preparation to recording a whistled imitation, as I wanted some record, even though approximate. It seems more likely then not that the birds started singing again in reaction to my whistles. Some of their song is in part a).
On the above occasion I was some 20 m. or more away from the birds. I then moved closer to where the birds were and whistled again. There seems little doubt that they reacted to this, coming closer and starting another song session, part of which is in part b ).
Therefore it seems that my crude imitation, which was probably reasonably accurate in rhythm and general pitch but not otherwise, was a sufficient signal for these birds. On a later occasion they also reacted to playback but on one after that, at a time when the birds were visibly present, they did not!
c) 7:05 AM. "Natural" song, later. Quality: 2+. Level: +3. 3.75 ips. LN.
Then song, some time after playback of c). Quality: 2. Level: +3. 7.5 ips. LN.
