    Equipment Note

NOTES: Weather: WIND; THIS BIRDWAS UNUSUAL IN THAT IT APPEARED OVER 1 MONTH LATE ON ITS TERRITORY. BIRD WAS RESTLESS AND FLEW FROM TREE TO TREE RATHER THAN HAVING 2 OR 3 PREFERRED SONG SITES. HE WAS THE ONLY MALE OF 18 STUDIED, THAT RESPONDED TO PLAYBACK AND ONE OF 3 THAT INTERCALATED A NOTE OF ENTIRELY DIFFERENT QUALITY IN SONG. FIRST PART OF RECORDING WAS MADE AT A DISTANCE, CAPTURING THE EFFECT OF THE INTERCALATED NOTE WHICH CARRIES MUCH BETTER THAN THE OTHER NOTE. SECOND PART GIVES RESPONSE TO PLAYBACK, THE BIRD SEARCHING BACK AND FORTH FOR SOURCE OF PLAYBACK. NOTE SQUAWKY NOTES,FAINT, AT BEGINNING - COMMON DURING COURTSHIP PERIOD. ON TWO OCCASIONS I BELIEVED THESE NOTES WERE UTTERED BY A FEMALE INVITING A MALE TO PURSUIT AND COPULATION. OVERGROWN PASTURE BUT WITH OCCASIONAL OPENINGS.
