NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 3. Bulk reel: 63; Extra cut length: 9:32203 tape.a) 1705 hours. Natural one-figure succession song by bird ca 500m or more across the gully. At ca 4:30PM I had recorded a bit of similar song coming from about this same position, given probably by the same bird. a1)The first set of clicks represents a time lapse of ca 6' that was edited out - bird was silent. a2) The second set of clicks represents an additional period of song of ca 4 1/2' (similar to that in the recording retained), plus a following period of about 2 1/2' of silence, plus an additional 1/2' of song (apparently from same place) before playback was tried, all of which has been eliminated. Quality: 3-; Level: +5; Tape speed: 3.75.This is followed by recording after playback and the bird appears to have come closer. The playback was only of the one-figure succession song from the field tape; the alternate song was not played. Quality: 3+; Level: +5; Tape speed: 3.75b) After more playback (still only of one-figure succession song), the bird is now closer and is singing "tentatively" w/ short one-figure succession phrases; these then become louder and longer. Then the bird gives some "alternate song' and short one-figure phrases. Then a second owl is heard in the background giving mainly the alternate song, which the near owl answers in kind. Quality: 2-; Level: +3; Tape speed: 3.75"c) 6:25PM. Weather: Cloudy. This is a continuation of b) but copied from original recording. Then, after playback, three groups of one-figure succession song from field tape. (Also, note how owl answers the background bird). Then after playback of two songs of alternate song from field tape. At end of Cut 3c) I added some of the last part of the original recording at 7.5ips. Quality: 2; level: 0; Tape speed: 3.75 copy from orig @ 7.5 and filt. 200/4Khz.
