NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 28 cont.. Bulk reel: 45; Extra cut(s) on bulk reel: 46; Extra cut length: 2:42
This species was heard in natural song ~ 9:00 PM. However, in spite of the clear moonlit night, very little activity by owls was noticed after that so finally I played the field tape recordings of this species (from Rancho Grande), which brought the birds into vocal activity.
a) First some song recorded at this time. Quality: 2. Level: +12.
b) Song, now after playback of a). Quality: 1-2. Level: +10.
Note that the last song is @ noticeably higher pitch than those preceding. Quality: 1. Level: +5.
This bird then collected (= male #6856 brown phase).
c) 3/XII/68 1:35 AM. Bird #2 (after other collected) across the road (not in focus in background). Quality: 2. Level: +12.
In background is a female C. huhula; then later O. choliba. Quality: 1-2. Level: +10.
Then some time after playback, bird is now closer. Quality: 1. Level: +5.
This bird then collected (= male #6855 red phase).
