NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 22. Bulk reel: 42
Weather: Fair, moon. Birds called up by playing field tape. Their first vocal reaction was the modified song, but by the time I started recording they had pretty well changed to typical song. Quality: 1. Level: +5.
The bird in focus flew away. His recorded song was played and it (or its mate) came in again and sang the typical song. Quality: 1. Level: +3.
Then after more playback, some bother vocalizations. Quality: 2. Level: +14.
The birds then lost interest in further playback of their own song and left, could not be brought back. But then playback of the field tape did bring one in again and it was collected (= female #6870.
Note: The nights of 7/XII/68 near San Vicente de La Revancha, Tachira (1600 m.) the only owl heard was this species ~ 9:00 PM, moon not yet up. As it didn't sing again, nor any other heard, ~ 11:00 PM I played field tape, all species. The only reaction was by choliba, which came in and gave quiet bother sounds but no song. With repeated playback of field tape it flew excitedly back and forth but still no song. I then collected it (= male #6772).
