NOTES: WELL-FED, AGGRESSIVE NESTLING AT BASE OF TREE WHERE NEST FALLEN. WHEN BIRD WAS APPROACHED IT ABANDONED ITS CONCEALMENT POSE AND ADOPTED A THREAT POSTURE - MOUTH OPEN, WINGS SPREAD, CROWN ERECT. IT BEGAN TO SCREAM WHEN I REACHED OUT MY HAND A RASPY SCREAM USUALLY, BUT NOT ALWAYS, PRECEEDED BY A WHISTLE. THE SCREAM WAS PRODUCED DURING EXHALATION; THE WHISTLE MAY HAVE BEEN INHALATION. THIS SCREAM-WHISTLE VOCALIZATION IS HEARD UNDER OTHER CONDITIONS WHEN THERE IS NO THREAT OR FRIGHT

BNA: These "screams" probably represent renditions of the "eee-grack" call (sensu BNA) given by a nestling in response to a perceived threat. [CAM - 23 February 2005]
