NOTES: Range status: CAPTIVITY; A.T. TORDA. BIRD CAPTURED EARLIER THAT DAY AT BARNEGAT LIGHT NEAR BEACH HAVEN. OIL MATTED WINGS HAD PREVENTED IT FROM FLYING. SOUND: A LOW NASAL 'AUK' ALMOST HUMANLIKE IN INFLECTION--CALL IDENTICAL TO THAT MADE EARLIER ON THE BEACH. IT WOULD READILY ANSWER AN IMITATION OF ITS CALL AND INCREASED THE FREQUENCY OF ITS CALL IN RESPONSE TO PLAYBACK. BIRD FED READILY. SEX UNKNOWN, PROBALBY EITHER MALE IN IMMATURE PLUMAGE OR FEMALE. WHEN HAND-HELD, THE BIRD CONTINUALLY PADDLED ITS FEET IN A SWIMMING Sex: 1 UNKNOWN

[I suspect this is the Alarm Call described in BNA account, but it is spectrographically similar to the "Lure Call" of an adult (despite a very different context). Quality changed from 1-2 to 1 (apart from a little hiss, there is nothing here but the bird's calls) - CAM - 23 March 2005]
