NOTES: (No. of Animals: 8 adults, male and female. Breeding Status: Breeding.Stimulus for Sound: Natural, no playback. Parabola: 102/25.) Parabola was placed in lower branches of Algeroba (Prosopis chilensis) pointing directly upward toward a spot where the terns (usually 4-5 at a time) often came to flutter as if about to alight. At this time they would call. About 75' of microphone cable was reeled out so that the recorder and operator would not be directly under the birds, thus preventing them from coming to this spot. Recorded west of bay, above cliffs, in a crater forested with Algeroba. One bird was nesting on an Algeroba branch about 4" in diameter. Others flew overhead; sometimes one or two would light in Algeroba branches. This was the first time in recorded history that this species of tern has been known to roost on the main islands of the Hawaiian chain. the one chick was raised to the point of its flying away, at which time the entire flock left. Still and motion pictures were made. Accuracy of the recording can easily be spoiled by too loud a playback.
