    Equipment Note

Raucous call and nervous twittering from 200m away. I moved to within 50m before the bird fell silent. Playback was used (after the second recording break) but this did not stimulate more calls. Instead, the bird began to give nervous twittering that marks his approach towards a rival calling in his territory. I played back the calls again (third break) and the bird came rather close, always staying within a hedgerow. Additional playback stimulated no further response.

Habitat: Old pasture with much second-growth in thickets and hedgerows.
