A male bird displaying and doing small jump-displays alongside road leading to golf course. On this road, poplar and spruce trees form a fairly open margin. He was giving v. low-energy and very low-pitched hoots (below 100cps?) which I recorded by holding open microphone within about 10-12 feet. To do this booming the bird inflates deep red air sacs and leans forward. It would also occasionally shake its wings and give a little jump. The frequency of the booming is around 100 CPS.

ML: High pass filter at 95 cycles and low pass filter at 105 cycles.

ML: Identification changed to D. obscurus by Greg Budney on June 9, 1983.

ML: Subject changed from recordist's original identification of Dendragapus obscurus richardsonii to Dendragapus obscurus to conform to eBird Taxonomy (v. 1.55). -Jay McGowan/Matt Medler, July 2015.
