NOTES: THIS PAIR, PROBABLY MALE AND FEMALE, ENGAGED IN A RITE OFTEN SEEN AMONG NORTHERN FLICKERS. ONE BIRD STOOD ERECT AND CALLED, THE OTHER SQUATTED. THEN THEY ALTERNATED, THE SECOND BIRD GIVING A DIFFERENT VOCALIZATION. ONE BIRD'S VOCALIZATION IS THE CLEAR, SLIGHTLY SLURRED WHISTLE; THE OTHER VOCALIZATION IS THE FAMILIAR 'WHA-CHEER' CALL. DURING THIS RECORDING THE BIRDS WERE CLOSE TOGETHER ON A DEAD STUB OF A TREE ABOUT 4M FROM THE GROUND. SOMETIMES THEY PERFORMED ON SEPARATE BRANCHES OF THE SAME TREE. BRUSH AND TREES ALONG BANK OF STREAM IN PASTURE. 2 ADULT(S); MALE?; FEMALE?
