NOTES: (Background Sounds: Gambel's Quail and various desert species; Species Sound: isolated; Breeding Status: territorial solitary; General Climate: dry; Cover Density: medium) Territorial male singing within 100 yds of dry wash for a full hour. Recorded from 9:05 - 10:05am. Bird brilliant blue on back from head to tail and on underparts. The blue was a brilliant iridescent color, the same color on breast and back. Face and throat near the bill were black. Wings a dull greyish black - no wing bars seen in approx. 25 minutes of constant observation in direct sunlight. Bill dull black and conical. Tail dull bluish above, not well seen below. Leg color not noted. In the hour of observation the bird was not heard to give any other song or call than the one on this cut; in particular it did not give any of the songs or calls Blue Grosbeaks were heard to give at several times during the previous 2 hours. Ran out of tape before completion of rest of desired announcement on tape and therefore completed statement in notes. BNA: song. I heard call notes, but was unable to identify call type.mf
