11813 -12410 Vg birds -setting up

12430 ms asking what kind of birds -are they Indian commerants? Indian darters?

12451 rot -darters

Where are they from>?

12504 Rot - They start to nest during this season but

Ms -strt to nest end of oct

Rot -then they leave in the dry season (hard to understand them)

Ms -where migr from?

12540 rot asking the boat driver

12635 pour translating for the ranger -MS -where are birds coming from
And how long here

12652 ranger talking in khmer
12723 tranl pour -before we had around 600 birds in 2000 and now we come 4000 in 2004 in this period of time
Ms -where from?
12804 ranger
12819 pour -not sure where from but this bird is from long time ago

12839 ms -oriental darters
Pour -yes o. darter and in khmer we call is smaa (?)

12852 ms -where are we and why impr for birds -signif of this place

12942 Rot - this area -big threat of this area is cutting the flooded forest and we have to preserve bc the flooded forest is the habitat for not only human for biodiversity of bird species and fish as well and other priority is the chick andbird collection so that why this area become protect are in ts great lake area

Ms -in terms of mog species of birds -do you know how many come here?

13045 rot ???? found 600 of that time -we find a lot of species that ????? can't understand him -pelican, oriental raptor, LISTS some of the bird species and also Asian (not sure if we can use this bc hard to understand him)?? as well.

Ms -these are all bird species ¿endangered species yes we are looking at these birds and there are hundreds of these oriental darters in the trees -just looking around I can see dozens of these trees with hundreds of these birds already

13100 rot -have found a lot of species that are going to be extinct -LISTS name of somebirds 13135 endangered

13204 -rot -just start to increase after we have started biolog conservation in this area
And OSme org and Wildlife Conserv Society and we are working on conserve activity especially focus on this area for water bird species (this could work -not sure how much we can understand him) that is why you can see lots of birds here bc the population is increasing more and more

13245 ms -biggest threat is

13256 rot - yes, deforestation on flooded forest and especially birds endangered chick collection for the ?? biodiver. Of wildlife here

Ms -what would be lost here

13327 rot -if we do not set up project conservation -cambodianpeople or visitors would not see spot bill pelican and ?? for ex and all of this will be very usefsul for wildlife conservation but also for ?????? the visitors can >>>>

Ms -also imp for the people

Rot -yeah for the people as well growing up and then we can start to introduce them again bc the ?? is easier or good fo people but can be an enemy as well so we have to ?? given demand to be higher

Ms -another place in world that has this many species of mig waterfowl

13520 rot -for endangered species we don't hope so -we don't think that 13527

1313550 asking hhow long has been working here -

Ranger to pourhe has been working here for 5 yrs and his name is WHYRO

13650 WHYRO /pour - yes, he is from here¿this village is named pretour village

13719 ROT pron name. I am from sreap¿..saying what he did before ¿.natural habitat

13759 ms talking with zeb

13817 zeb -let me clarify that -the way that I understand is that this is the only critical breeding area for several species of birds so this the most imp breeding area for the endan species that were mentioned

Ms -imp breed area for hundreds of species. Not why we came here. Everything that we see here pales in comparison what is actually going on below

13845 z - yeah. I was just looking around and you can see fish everywhere.

Why this area is so imp to you.

Z -well, this is the the heart of fish life in se asia. The tonle sap lake is. So you have this huge flooded area -everything around here is flooded and there are plants underwater and I see fish everywhere I look rising to the surface -this is the core area for fish in seasia and the fish are growing in all of these flooded areas and they also in rainy season they will move out so they move out of the lake, they move down to the river so that providesfish for all of the people that live along the river

13936 ms -we afre ttalking about one lake in camb which is a very small lake to begin with -this is the place for the entire se asia

Z -all over -not just in camb but in vietn, laos, prob Thailand. So if you remember when we were in kampotchan -that is 300/500 miles from here and fish from this area where we are right now, move, migrate from this area to Kampotcha 14000 the fish that they catch 500 miles from here in the Mekong come from here

Ms -what makes this so unique>?

14017 Z -well this area where we are right now -right now, it is underwater . during dry season this is heard ground it is not flooded year round so we have a huge expanse of central camb that floods during the rainy season and opens up all of this flooded habiat that you see right now and so the fish spread out in this whole area to feed. If you look around you can see the fish feeding from the surface and they are feeding now and they are growing and there are 5000 sq klicks - or howevern many -this huge expanse that is all open to fish right now and so the fish grow in this area and that drives the productivity in this area. 14059

14100 ms -so this is the buffet for seasi

Z -this is the fish buffet during the rainy season

Ms -fish buffet but you say bc it is dry part season but if ot then not all nutrients

Z -yeah not only would you not have all of the nutrients but you wouldn't have such a productive fishery 14120 bc people fishing in this area take advantage of the seasonality of the river and the fish are adapted to the seasonality of the river as well so not only do you have the fisherman that take advantage of the movmnts of fish absed on the seasons -the ebb and flow of the water in and out of tslake. But you also have the fish that are adapted living in the ts part of the year and some move out of ts at end of season and into Mekong. They spawn in the Mekong upspring and begin of next rain season and all of the fish are washed in high flood waters washed back up to these areas to grow and thus complete life cycle.

14206 ms -fish buffet -river reversal..all fish in se asia come but how can come if riv flows other way

Z -14223 the river 14234 the tsriver which connects the tslake and the Mekong changes direction so in rain season when water v high. You have to think of this area as a huge flood plain and what it does when water high it covered with water so basically the water from the Mekong -bc it is so high -the tsriver which is connected to the ts lake -reverses direction so all of the flooded forest and lake you see right here only waist deep in dry season so all of that water from the rainy season coming from upper Mekong backs up into this area and the lake goes from being knee deep to 25 or 30 feet deep in the height of the rainy season 14326

Ms -brings fish to eat

Z -yeah bc that brings some adult fish but really imp it brings all of young fish spawn season happens at same time that all of the flood water coming to tslake. And so all of young fish brought up in here and find food and refuge in the lake but they can so they can reproduce. And when ready to reproduce ¿certain fish spend their entire life in tslake and then other fish once reach size they migrate out of tsl and reproduce and that completes their life cycle. So you understand the fish spawn in the Mekong, the young fish are washed down into the Mekong that includes where we are right now; they feed and grow large and once they are adults they move back to tsl down tsr and into Mekong to spawn again 14426

Ms -just a huge grazing area for all fish in seasia but come here

Z -not only the fish but a buffet for the -you see the water birds they are all feeding off of fish -it is buffet for brds for the fish -

Ms -w/out lake here what would happen to fishery

14457 Z -fishery wouldn't be nearly as productive. In a lake in a river if you think of a river w/out a flood plain such as this the fish are confined to the main river and they don't have all of that haitat to feed and to grow so the total habitat open to them might a 10th or a 20th or a 100th of what is now that you have huge flood plain. So actual amount of habitat that youhave on river is act very small. As you can see during rainy season they have a hue expanse of Cambodia that is underwater so they canspread out all over Cambodia to feed and thenduring dry season it all drains and they are all forced back into this very confined area of the main river channel of the main lake and they are easier to harvest and so that is what drives the productivity in sense of fisheries productivity the harvest. There are huge harvests in the Mekong. That is what drives those huge harvests.

14555 m -when think of camb they think of war they think of the kr they think of maybe ang w and ver little else. People say failed country politically, economically not a lot either but interms of environ it is crucial of the sustainability of this entire region

14624 z -yeah. This is the epicenter for freshwater fish and esp the tslake.

14630 -m -so camb actually has a lot going for it - in terms of protct biod of entire region

Z -none more so in terms of fish. I don't know in terms of other animals -certainly you can see -water birds -the only place where some of these birds breeding -but in terms of fish this area is absolutely critical and sometimes other countries might not appreciate how imp it is here bc w/out the tsl or river driving this system the fisheries would not be nearly as productive. 14711

14810 ambi in this area with birds thru 15037

15052 z -this is where they (gc) become giant. Fisherman have caught gc in the lake but typically they are smaller we see adults in tsr as moving out of lake but under us there are probably one or 2 smaller gc that are feeding and growing large and in a few yrs they will grow out of the lake and move into the Mekong to spawn.

M -w/o lake they wouldn't exist

Z -flooded areas they wouldn't exist -flooded area v imp and this lake is largest fresh water lake in seaasia.

15131 m -total land mass of cambo - what percent of country

Z -I believe about 15% - 20 of country that is underwater but not just lake it is lake it is downstream from Mekong -it is all of flooded area w/in the basin

M -we don't consider it the ts flood plain we Mekong

Z -I am not sure what called bc streches from sr all the way to Vietnam border and that includes area around pp. so when you fly into pp during height of rainy season it is an island -it is surrounded by water. So this whole area from sr to pp up to viet border and beyond is all flooded 15222 -

M -don't know what it is called

15254 Ambi -very good birds

15339 - 15734 SAME birds but now in MS STEREO and MUST BE DECODED

15957 END OF DAT
