Jungle birds

0:27 SJ so now we know how to recognize what the terrestrial damage looks like. We've been to a place that's been just devastated what we to do now next is to see how much it extends along a hundred kilometers of coastline.
0:55 so what we need to do next now is go up in the air¿ (could bring in helicopter)
and try to see areas like this that we're in right now and map the extent of those patches.
We know that this disturbance occurred all over the coast, but we know its also patchy where it does occur so we need to get out there to figure out which of the spots which
Of the areas were hit.. ..and you can do that from the air?..here's the thing the decision to
Go up before versus after
Without being on the ground here when we went up on the helicopter we would have totally second guessed, we'd be flying over this saying is that really the tsunami, I can't believe that's just dead forest, but when we get down here and clearly see wave damage and fishing gear up in a tree 200 meters from the ocean we know what it looks like so now when we get up in the helicopter I think we can map it because I think we can see it.
2:12 so the first place we'll bring the chopper over is this spot now which we've walked we've done it twice, we've mapped it, we've done transects we know what it looks like, so we'll look at it from the air get our search image correct and go up the coast and look for the same pattern, and wherever we see that we're pretty sure it's tsunami damage. (You know in time we'll go back and ground truth..but it's the next big step) There's one other big step and that's bringing all this information together bringing it to the government and to the other conservation interests in a coherent fashion so they can make something of it, and giving them the courage to put into place a plan of action. ********
3:20 as far as I know this time and the other team working in sri lanka are the only ones doing it.
4:57 SJ it hit me when I got off that plane and there was a woman in an immaculate sari that said Dr. Sanjayan tsunami damage assessment. And I went oh god, that's what I'm here to do. That was hard, I'll tell you what is, what sort of makes it palatable to be here and get on with your work, the outpouring from international community is incredible () and sort of the best of my western upbringing, and in some ways its bringing the best the us has to offer to the country of my birth so in some ways it feels actually kind of good to be here.********

MS ambi for previous interview
8:26 (much louder than during interview ?????????) -- 11:30

11:40 ambi on the road in jeep in the park (MS) good, nice and slow (but not much)

29:59 mostly from yala safari lodge.
30:10 talking all in Singhalese (good) sounds like meeting better than before
30:29 we've basically mapped the whole parameters of all the bays, we've got all that and we are doing assessment of the damage to the vegetation..
so you did how far the wave zone went in, we did the wave zone and we did the parameter of each wave, every incursion, for all the areas that the water has left the dunes, only up to the river, it's slow going, SJ of course.
31:46 SJ asking lots of questions about transects
34:00 SJ so have you found the damage to be consistent everywhere..
woman: depends on geography and topography of the coast¿
SJ so we were planning on flying the coastline¿.
38:55 so my question to you is will this be valuable to you..yes. it's a quick way of doing
40:00 ambi waves (short)
