Habitat where specimen was collected: Wairau-Rainbow divide, Marlborough. Rocks & herb field. 5,800 feet.

Mr. Dugdale phoned asking me to come to his laboratory to tape this insect he had captured at above habitat, and send a copy of the tape to Dr. Charles A. Fleming who (with Dugdale) is revising the taxonomy of NZ cicadas. The insect was placed in a screened cardboard box under a desk lamp whose heat warmed it and caused it to "sing". They now prefer this technique to field recording, believing that the difference in sound between natural and controlled conditions is insignificant in cicadas.
