Inasmuch as the Cicada was recorded in Lake Paringa, Westland, January 28, 1966 may be an undescribed species, we decided to record Cicadas around Nelson for comparison, doing so at Rough Island February 8, 1966 in an exotic pine plantation there. The ones on this cut were taped across the street from our rented home at 21 Tui Glen Road. They also were in pine trees and one was captured. They are singing all over town, and in the country, making bird recording impossible. A few days ago it was announced on the radio that Greymouth, Westland, had a Cicada invasion and the noise was quite an annoyance. The Paringa cicada later was identified as cingulata.
