Tape 4
01 00000 slate tape as MS stereo MKH50/MKH30. Ignore the part of the slate that talks about another version of the bunkhouse scene on Tape 3¿.that didn't happen.
02 00050 at the Bunkhouse, Nancy Higginbotham and 6 searchers discuss what data they'll be logging in the field and how often they'll do it. There's a wide range of opinion within the group as to what to do. Miking perspective changes several times through this track, partly to highlight different searchers' voices at different points in the discussion, partly to stay out of the way of CBS camera and independent filmmaker microphone. At one point a refrigerator turns on in the kitchen¿this gets silenced within a couple of minutes. Multiple beeps as they test Family Band radios they'll be using (Ch 13/Ch3)
03 03635 discussion continues, group rules out linear transects

04 04100 Begin Thursday morning 6am, back at the bunkhouse before departure for the first day's searching. Outside ambiance near bunkhouse, dominated by Interstate 10 cars nearby.
04325 Car door slams, more footsteps. Voices of other media and staff.
04415 Knock on door, enter with Zeiss PR team Shannon and Anthony who bring breakfast from McD's for searchers.
05 04535 Off-mike voices. Group discusses first aid kits¿some will take, Alan sez he won't. They agree not to use playback of calls today to call in birds. Shannon announces what media goes with which searchers.
06 05145 David shows Shannon on map where the groups are going today
05300 various off-mike voices, then David shows Rick and Alison how to drive to north end of WMA
07 05545 off mike voices
08 05635 CBS audio guy (Danny) starts to wire up body mikes on Peter and David
I decide to follow Alan Wormington and Martjan Lammertink, who are also being tailed by a New Yorker writer and an independent filmmaker (watch for sounds of his 16mm Arriflex camera!).

09 10140 ambiance outside Bunkhouse, we depart in separate cars.
10 10426 arrival ambiance, car door slams at northern end of WMA, Po Boy Road north of old Rt 11, we then prepare to walk along a side road off Po Boy. 10720 Martjan does first check of GPS receiver to mark car location. Hard getting satellite lock at first. Then they work.
10850 the two decide how to label GPS memory of car position.
10945 GPS beeps. Note: Alan pronounces pileated "PILE-ated", some other searchers say "PILL-ee-ated"
11140 IDing trees. Yep, sweet gum is the one with the gumballs¿.
11235 sound of Arriflex 16mm film camera.
11310 Alan does a nice job of hearing birds, IDing them for us. "Boy there's a lot of birds in here, I'm amazed." Martjan is less verbal.
11 11510 "There's several red bellies."
11640 group walking sounds, watch out for poison ivy vines, more bird ID's
(log rest of this in detail later)
12 12729 footsteps and mid distant voices
14710 closeup of Arriflex 16mm film camera
13 14835 I leave group, they're more distant but stationary for a while, then they wander off
14 15203 their footsteps recede

15 15630 a new location, along Po Boy Road near where cars parked: ambiance with no voices. On tripod. Birds audible, but drowned out by highway and train sounds.
15720 train whistle
16 20021 BIG train whistle at higher amplification, great reverberation through woods with birds struggling to be heard
17 20645 I slate end of this recording with list of noxious noises included therein, then slate that next material will be recorded about one hour into Tape 3. That session is logged above.
