28: 09 (over radio) Jim Survey 1-4 go ahead
--Standby

28:46 Survey . . .

talking over radio

35:58
talking about how they search, casual conversation nvg, moving gear around @36:37-45

36 : 52
Bird wasn't found yesterday, was captured

37:36 bg
we're at frisbee meadow, got its name when i was on a NSF student originated studies project looking at high elevation rainforest ecosystems shaped like a frisbee round pocket of grass perched at 7000 feet at edge of . . . also used to play frisbee . . . average vegetation about chest height most plants found no where else except ... north slope . . . cold, steep . . . a lot of commitment to work here. . .

38 : 50 bg
prob most active time of year, breeding season so singing more than usual, concerned about not just one bird but ecosystem that supports

39:36
Besty Ganea, Harrison in '73 botanist and malacologist, i'm now acting program manager for natural area reserves system. Native ecosystems is reason for living . . .

40:38 bg
for me ultimate job evaluation is if all of this is here long after we're gone . . .

43 : 34 bg
one burning question what was this place like before people?

44 : 00 bg
biggest shock for me was to hear Japanese bush warblers it's an introduced bird-- pretty upset about that and cardinals have moved into the area...

44:25 jj
My name is Jack Jeffries i'm a wildlife biologist for fish and wildlife services, refuges my stake of ground is the big island..i'm biologist for . . . national refuge my job is for the birds and that's what i do for a living . . .

45:34 jj
the thing is you can go into an area once-- chance of seeing po'ouli nil and go there 100 times and not find and just happen to be there on the 101st time and one just jumps out in front of you--recording gets bad for a bit

46:20 bg
this tree we're going by is the geranium that gets to be about 10-15 feet tall . . .

@46: 50
going through bush, recording quality bad at certain points

walking continued to

48 : 28 bg
funny you look back across the gulch and you can't tell there's an open flat space where we camp just looks like a dense compact native shrubland.

more walking through vegetation

50:15 jj
quite a view 7000 feet below us, clouds below us. ..

51:30
going down to the forest.

walking recording getting fuzzy

55 : 33 bg
this is an unusual site to see--this called orolabius very unique distribution, one peak in Tahiti and here in Hi

56 : 02 bg
that's an opapani you hear in the background

56 : 19 bg
Into the forest

56:31 ---honeycreeper whistling

57:20
going up and down

57 : 38 bg
we use blue flagging tape to mark our main trail so we can see where we are going...

59 : 03 bg
relatively intact area where ground cover is pretty solid ferns-- shuttlecock ferns

59:29 cj are you looking more than listening?

59:32 we sort of like one eye and both ears on the birds one eye on the ground and maybe have an ear--sometimes if there's a pig out there you'll hear snorting or shuffling in the bush so its best not to surprise pigs they don't like to be as we say surprised

1:00:03 john - our project director found himself up a tree they'll charge i was charged by a pig on the big island . . . . I think its mostly they 're not really sure and they get startled, especially if you get between a sow and her baby . . . and they are known for their razor sharp tusks, i've seen what they've done to hunting dogs--its not a pretty sight, I've had enough surgery-- I don't need any more from being carved up by a pig.

1:01:11--26 squeeky chirping

1:01:40 bg
oh, this is a good bunch of birds

1:01:45 one of the better beds of bird ambi., continue chirping and flies buzzing to 1:03:40
