6:36 Walter Mancilla (WM) ¿ you see the stick right there? Lower down! You see the stick! There ¿ the head ¿ you can see it! See it crossing like that ¿ you can see the head there ¿ mas aya mas aya! You see the stick ¿ you can see the head! It is going ¿ it is moving (Leo says uh huh, uh huh)

11:48 G more calls for the jaguar

12:00 waiting for the jaguar¿some calls for it ¿ very low ¿ NG ¿

15:28 JN ¿ Walter, tell me what you saw

15:37 WM ¿ a jaguar ¿ over there ¿ at first it was over there, standing up, looking, coming down and looking at us again, probably there but he is going to check us ¿ a big guy ¿ 16:18 ¿ all the head. First time I see all the body. Standing up looking at us. But coming back looking at us I saw the head and - its massive head ¿ probably was a male, a really strong guy.

16:50 JN ¿ what color is a jaguar?

16:51 WM - ??? bright orange and the black and you mix it.

17:00 JN ¿ you see the eyes?

17:01 WM ¿ yeah, you could see it ¿ huge big eyes, really massive

JN ¿ was it looking at you?

WM ¿ (laughter )¿ a big guy!¿.it is probably looking at us from somewhere bc they are curious. (talk in spanish) - 18:11 it is difficult to see it bc its pattern is like a camouflage.

(JOHN: THE ABOVE INTERACTION IS OK ¿ NOT GREAT)

18:32 WM ¿ mumbling in Spanish

19:06 WM ¿ calling the jaguar

19:45¿20:26 ambi ¿ on river ¿ running water ¿ nice¿..

20:27-20:59 VG birds - macaws

21:00 ¿21:34 VG birds ¿ WM ¿ macaws calling ¿ then they drift off

21:42 WM ¿ calls for jaguar again¿..

23:09 boat start up

26:46 JN ¿ (stand-up on the boat as it is moving) maybe you have seen one of those pictures of the Amazon river where you can¿t see from one side to the other ¿ you know when the river is really wide like that boats can just zoom right up and down it. Well, the manu isn¿t like that at all. The manu is really shallow in places. It is hard to tell where a boat ¿ even this kind of boat can get around ¿ there are logs ¿ not logs ¿ trees sticking out of the water ¿ big bleached trees ¿ it looks like some giant picked them up off the side of the shore and threw them in. and they can definitely take a boat down. Right Walter? 27:26

27:27 WM- right ¿ sometimes the channel is just 3 meters wide and the driver need to be good enough to pass through that. Now we are at the hardest dry season this month. That is why sometimes you can find the line ¿ white clear line ¿ that means it is shallow.(JN asks about the line) WM ¿ yeah ¿ and the boat driver needs to read it like a book ¿ you can when it is shallow, when it is steep - but sometimes when it is windy you can¿t see the logs and it hits the engines - you have problems with the logs. 28:18

28;19 JN ¿ what is that ¿ what kind of birds?

WM ¿ mascovidad

JN ¿ a what?

WM ¿ mascovidad

JN ¿ they look sort of like peacocks w/out tails. Bright blue, funny little heads¿

28:38 WM ¿ you see for a while there are all the white lines over there ¿ it looks wide river ¿ but now he must move to the left side for the channel

JN ¿ have you ever lost a boat?¿sort of like the ice bergs of Amazonia

WM ¿ see all the white lines over there?

29:28 JN ¿ when is the last time a boat when down?

WM ¿ one time ¿ 3 months ago ¿ a tourist boat ¿ 29:50 Ah! We are stuck now ¿ this is shallow ¿ (talk in spanish ¿ then JN ¿ that is our wake catching up with us) ¿ 30:15 we are close to the edge

JN - The crew of the boat is now standing in the river ¿ pushing the boat forward¿.30:28 George (¿WHORE-HEY¿) moves over this boat like he is a spider ¿ he just zips back and forth ¿ he is always grabbing that pole in the front and pushing it into the water, and it never looks like it goes more than 2 feet. 30:44

30:46 WM - He is a hard man ¿ for choosing a trip like this they need to be hard people ¿ the cook needs to be hard ¿ not only cooking, but if something happens to boat driver he needs to cook ¿ even mechanical stuff¿.bc you are far away from civilization ¿ you must know all of this stuff for surviving, otherwise you are stuck. 31:17

31:18 JN ¿ are a lot of the logs ¿ you just see a great big thing under the water

WM ¿ yeah ¿ they can be 10 centimeter under the water ¿ and youdon¿t see it under the boat - ¿¿.

32:05 JN ¿ tell me the names of the people of the crew ¿

WM ¿ jorge, the boat helper is called Panacho, and the boat driver is called Carlos Trigosa. He is the president of the biggest village here ¿ and it is Periou (sp) Indian people. And the other is called Julio. Julio Vayez. He is from the other village ¿ Isla de los Vayez. His mix Periou Indian guy and Machigenga ¿ his mother is Machigenga his father is Periou. 32:38

32:39 JN ¿ where are you from?

WM ¿ I am from Ayacoche ¿ in the south of Peru from the jungle also. I get here 15 yrs ago.

32:50 JN ¿ what did you come here for?

32:51 WM ¿ well, I am looking for the pace ¿ we had a problem there ¿ narco trafficking in the area¿.the Shining Path, and escape here and I found the pace ¿

the nice people, nice forest ¿ wonderful nature here. (John ¿ maybe use this ¿ but not great¿)

33:14 JN - do you have nature like this where you are from?

WM ¿ there were ¿ actually it is a nice place to be there but too much people there and no controlling of the immigrations and narco traffic and terrorism came in the area and they killed all of the wildlife and destroy the forest ¿ and nothing left 33:45

33:46 JN ¿ was there a day when you decided to leave?¿.

33:58 WM ¿ it was really bc the terrorism ¿ the Shinning Path ¿ they came to our high school and took us - 34:15

34:16 IT IS TOO WINDY (Leo)

34:42 wind ambi on boat (NG)

34:55 ¿ 44:52 VG - rainstorm ¿ rain hitting tarp 35:20 thunder

45:12 banging ¿ loud ¿ distorted ¿ at boat maker¿.NG

45:32-46:02 clanking ¿ OK ¿ at boat maker ¿ rain in bg ¿

46:17 ¿ 47:27 banging at boat maker ¿ planning wood, banging.

47:55 JN - I hear a chain saw. You can¿t have a chainsaw in the park can you?

WM ¿ you can¿t. inside the park you can not. They have TV here. They have a small generator that they have light and they have water also here. 48:18

48:19 JN ¿ the reason I brought that up ¿ there are one of the ideas of how to handle the indigenous situation is to tell people who are in the park ¿ well, if you want these things you have to come out of the park to places like this

48:38 ¿ WM - really not bc that could be one of the best idea too ¿ the other things is that the indian people they have been there too before they had created the park. And probably the indian people need to have the title of land. They need to know how large the area and how they can populate the place ¿ if the population grows. It could be very interesting to have some places like here ¿ not all of these areas are not protected ¿ this

size is village size ¿ but the other side of the river is free ¿ we can make some project where the indian people can make their own place ¿ from outside the park. 49:32

49:33 JN ¿ so when people talk about finding incentives to lure people out of the park this is where they would come ¿

49:42 WM - yeah. This could be one of the places to do something ¿ that would solve part of the problem.

49:56 ¿ 53:41 ambi in area ¿ chainsaw in bg ¿ people talking very loud

54:21 ¿ 55:28 ambi ¿ kids talking, raining, baby crying

55:36 ¿ 1:00:25 WM on the radio ¿ talking in Spanish

1:00:42 ¿ 1:03:00 someone else on the radio¿¿then some quiter ambi at end

1:04:53 ¿ 1:13:04 VG - night ambi ¿ at the resort = end of DAT
