1456 I AM ALEX.... I am Zahira Kamal, director of gender planning and development in the ministry planning and international cooperation .. .I am from Jerusalem .. .I am active in politics, women's rights as well as a national activist as well .......struggling for independence and women's rights at the same time...from here I can see Jerusalem in the heart of the Palestinians .. .

IT IS NOT JUST THEIR CAPITOL IS IN THEIR. HEARTS? yes ....also it is the Heart of Palestine....

WHEN YOU WERE A GIRL DID YOU LIVE IN THE CITY? My family was well rooted in the city .. .I was born here .. .I went to university and then the 67 war erupted and I lost my right to be here, I came here as a visitor .. .then I got a family reunion permission ...

WHAT DID YOU DO IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL? HOW WAS THE CITY? until I saw other cities I thought it was the biggest and the greatest ....now I am a world traveler ... .I like cities that are like Jerusalem .. .I don't like active cities .. .I like calm city ....

YOU SEE IT AS A SMALL CITY? I think it's big..... .I see the history ... ....I like cities that you can learn from the culture and people... .I see Jerusalem 2000 years ago .....when you see how the wall was built and the churches. real culture ....the other thing I see is the reconciliation between religion and culture ... the stones are ??? to each other and are making the beauty....the three religion were living together .... Friday Muslims ... Saturday for the Jews .....Sunday -Christians ...it makes me love Jerusalem more ...

YOU ??? BECAUSE YOU THINK IT IS SAFE? yes despite what wen have this time ... because of the occupation, the struggle of the Palestinians and the measures that have been taken by the Israelis I can still see ??? city is very old and if we consider the years of war we can find that this is a small periods of time

HOW LONG AGO DID YOU FAMILY COME HERE? 1000 Years ago ...they were from the first ones Jerusalem ... they started at the old city ... they were merchants and they went. outside the old city... building in Romema and Talbia and they lost a lot in 1948 and became refugees .......they were edu??? most of them are in Jordan ....one third is here in Palestine ...

YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR OLD FAMILY HOUSE IS? yes ....from my father's side ....there is a place in East Jerusalem that is a mosque and house....they were taking care of it...after 67 we went there and it is not taken care of...

WHEN YOU WERE A GIRL HERE ...WHAT DID YOU DO? when I was a girl and until I got town arrest (uri: what???) to go to old Jerusalem ....my family's house now is near Rocffeler's museum ....5 minutes from the city..... I go there and I go around ....when I come back my father asks what I do .... I can say that a??? know every person in Jerusalem ....that makes it easy to me to find things and I have access to many things...

YOU LIKE TO WANDER THROUGH THE CITY? yes ... when I was in London ....first t?? Europe ... .I finished school early ....they told me stay in London but I missed Jerusalem and I wanted back. ...

WHEN YOU WALK DOWN THE STREET YOU KNOW MANY PEOPLE? yes... even of work that I am doing .. .I miss that walk now .. .I do it but it is a bit different ....

WOULD YOU SPEND AN HOUR, TWO WALKING? Yes, an hour ..maybe two hours ...

WHEN YOU WALK THE CITY ...YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE IF YOU CLOSED YOUR EYES? yes... not only in the east but west...put me anywhere and I can come back with the shortest cuts...

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PLACE IN THE OLD CITY? yes ... .in front of the 7 arches hotel... there a place you can stand there there 3 times a week at sunset having cake or pizza and we have a dinner in the open air .....there are places in the old City ....there is a panoramic view, near the church ....

WHAT CHURCH? can't remember name ...

TOWN ARREST -WHAT IS THAT? 1980 I have got a town arrest order -like an administ. . . .????? only you are not in prison you are at home.....can not leave the house between dusk and dawn. . . you ??? leave the city. . . and had to sign 3 times a day in the police. . .

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO AN AMERICAN? we are nearing the year 2000 and it is an opportunity to come and see a city in which you feel the beauty and the history of the city ...

IS IT A HARD PLACE FOR A CHILD ... CITY OF STONE? have a lot of plays that relate to stone .. .hit and run..... you learn about balance about it is open ... to people ... other culture .... people are open to other cultures here ... I can feel myself accommodate with people ....

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO JERUSALEM IN 2000? I want Jerusalem to be shared by the 2 people ... and all Palestinians can come here and enjoy ... (4000)

4335 Amichai starts reading from his poems .........

YOU ARE KNOWN AS THE POET OF JERUSALEM? I don't like this title live a private life ...

HOW DID YOU WRITE ABOUT THE CITY BEFORE YOU WEREN'T THERE ... not in the old city .. .I was there when I was a kid....before 47 I could get there ...

YOU WERE THERE AS A KID ....yes.. with my brother as he was a religious man ....

WHAT YOU FEEL WHEN YOU COULD NOT GO TO THE OLD CITY? it was a kind of Romantic Never land .. .like a beautiful woman unreachable.....I am not religious and I don't care too much about h??? places yet I was very happy ....

DO YOU RECALL A DAY IN 67 AND HEARD THAT ISRAEL WON THE WAR? yes .. we were all relieved from death ..actually I was on my way back from the US and the first war that I didn't take part in ....

YOU WERE NOT RELIGIOUS THEN ...no ... BUT STILL ??? BACK TO THE OLD CITY MEANT A LOT FOR YOU? it was extremely excited ....of course the Quarter was all destroyed ....the wall was a narrow strip of land and it was a great relief that we were alive and we saw the holy place....Jews don't have a holy place ......it is just a wall .. .I wrote a pre??? book called "the western wall"

WHAT DID YOU SAY THERE? well, a few more historic remarks main feeling is that this is just a wall ... it is outside ...as if someone keeps an old shoe or letter ... if you keep something you keep it..,.. .it is a poor thing . .it was never a shrine ....

A STORY FROM WHEN YOUR FATHER TOOK YOU....my father used to. . . you don't understand ... ...(uri: he is very unclear) for the three religions and it is a violent city religions should collaborate and find a way .. .I go to the ??? in the old city I buy things .......

FOR YOU THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PLACE IS THAT IT'S AN ACTUAL CITY .... ABSOLUTELY.. .it is not a museum ... it is still alive ...we have an old place h??? is still popular .... people always come and enjoy the western wall ... they have weddings there ... they treat it like the Stone of Kabba in Mecca or the St. Peter's and I think it is wonderful ..... it is a great peace ...

CAN YOU READ ONE OF YOUR POEMS IN HEBREW? YOU DID THIS ON ALL THINGS CONSIDERED .... three days before Rabin was killed he called me and he wanted to go to the White ??? with him....he read some of my poems in that peace rally .. .it's a sad memory for me .. ...here he reads poem in Hebrew .... you understood three words ... Venice, god and Venice ....

10210 Rich heard .....Michael heard ....

10307 muezzin heard ....in the b.g a baby cries ...

10520 voices in Arabic...asking for another five minutes ....Adnan heard ....Rich and Adnan talk with Arab guys about microphones ....

11300 Arab Guy starts to sing the AlIahu Akbar (great!!) in the b.g is the muezzin heard very remotely

11758 iron door is slammed and keys slowly sound moving away. . . (good), (beautiful ending",)
