lg 12:23 pm 3/8/98 continue ms recording cardioid on left, fig 8 on right

--on Nuki. gentle rocking of boat

--one under boat, movement of equipment

1:58 ac falling in water

moving around

7:08
breathing, boat rocking, water... splash in water ...boat motor in distance

8:17 lh today is sunday mar 8th about 12:35 pm, just uh came from a single animal down about 40 ft i estimate just lying stationary down there pec fins spread out from body some white on pec fins i dove down i should have some pretty good video i estimate i was down about 20 ft enough to get my ears hurting i suspect that this animal could be the singer that has stopped singing and has now just gone quiet and is resting and uh continued to film until with a very slight stroke of its tail it swam off and could not get underneath whale so its all dorsal views. (snapping pictures)

water, boat motor.

10:56 lh calf head slapping, rising halfway out of water and then coming down on her belly, we have a lunge by one of the whales what we call a lateral tail slap ...this is some aggressive behavior being shown between two adult whales (BLOWS) ... inflated head rise by animal on the right, calf on the left, escort on the right two escorts, flukes coming ... 0% ...three adults and a calf here, calf coming out of the water and head slapping, adult coming with a huge peduncal slap lateral tail slap ... so they're displaying we think to each other prob alot of underwater activity as well ...another headrise ...12:38

boat riding waves, water, boat motor ...

13:21 whale blows ...good ambi of boat, rough conditions on water

16:47 lh nice head slap frame 6 16:51 whale blows, escort coming up, flukes coming, flukes coming right, frame 7 was the 0%

19:12 lh fluke's coming

19:19 lh nice breach by the CALF

19:34 lh calf still breaching...fairly large calf.

20:48 Blows, 20:57 again

21:45 ac another pod coming in now

22:40 lh
notice that the calf is head slapping while the mom is pec slapping

23:57 lh got a change of direction here, turned south, they were going is north 24:32 they have changed direction at least one of them is heading south.

25:42 lh calf is still head-slapping.

26:44'lh one animal going lateral to the rest ... fluke's coming

28:38 lh mom and calf are second in line escort in front, mom and calf, then escort behind and another one behind that.

29:39 ac you think some of these animals are trying to scare off some of the others?

--oh absolutely this is a competitive field here

29:59 lh yeah def there is alot of competition taking place, we have three escorts and a calf and poss four escorts and they are actively trying to intimidate each other and we saw one escort ahead of the mother and two others behind that one

30:37 BLOWS --lh whoaa

--it's not unusual, part of the way they sort themselves out after all this is a highly social sit w alot of comp between the males ...how they sort themselves off we have to wait and see ...and it can get to violence they'll strike each other you'll see them with bloody dorsal, bloody nodules on their heads ...they'll tail thrash each other and there's forty tons of weight behind that, so its alot of momentum, alot of energy

32:40 lh
on the left here, calf on the left ...

35:15 Ih underwater blow, escorts surfacing

following pod, snapping pictures ...

44:20 mark one of the secondary escorts has all white flukes underneath is one of the trailing animals pairing up with another whale if you closely you can see two long very new scars that are red and bloody probably from physical contact with the other whales

--25% Ih that's a diff one

47:55 Ig same group of whales

48:11 Ih 23 calf. ..

snapping pics

52:24 whistling, water, people talk~~gf 7heering...for whales, 0 ___ .

53: 12 Ih -..J \..J~r-__'\Iv.-¬fluke's coming pair off to right... -+0 ~

molly calf turns direction traveling straight west

cheering in background

following and describing pod

59:15 Ih beginning to look like these other escorts are holding off to one side can you verify that there is an escort close to mom okay that escort seems to have been successful in keeping the others at some distance at this point ...so we have our principle escort here has been maintaining some space between him and basically
the secondary ones ....

59:59 Ih so all that interaction that we saw before at this point seems to have resulted in the success for one of the escorts keeping the others at least temp at bay while he remains w mother nd calf this doesn't provide a mating opp necc but it gives him poss for the moment ...

--ac is there any sense that this is the male that fathered the calf

1:00:29 lh
abs not no ... the males would have no sense of who their offspring are

1:04:04 lh
escort that surfaced a minute ago has a white mark on its dorsal fin

1:01:00 lh most mammals the male does not engage in the care of the youngsters its mother's job among mammals ... father's job is to become a father as many times as poss ...mother's job is to find the best mate poss to have best offspring...
