Gamma DAT # 2: Lynn and Greg
Bahamas

0:00 (rolling inside sub just before lynn gets in...an interesting bg efx bit here in stereo)

2:30 LN: i'm going, i'm gone!

don: go on your stomach...

LN: how will i see the most?

don: oh, lay on your side...

(greg instructions)

5:00 LN: now if i lay down, where do i put my feet?

don: just over there..

5:28 don: that's the blower...keeps it cool.

6: 13 LN: so i'm in the sub now...small...more comfortable than i thought it would be...surrounded by small portholes...at the moment, one porthole near my eyes...humid, but will be cooler....pulling away now...rocking back and forth...free and clear...moving out into sea...very blue...although haven't started descending... i want to say it's like flying but it's not...you know you're not above it...but we still haven't started descending...

8:20 don: oh yes we have!

LN: oh we have.... looking up, seeing the top of the water... light moving around (not little fish)

8:50 don: exuma hunter...heading down...

9:20 LN: further down now than i've ever been...

9:39 don: 120' below... just below is ledge...the wall...

10:05 LN: some coral, algae. . . big sponges. . . tiny purple fish. . . some pink coral. . . bright blue. . . on one side, drops into space. . . dropping down now. . .

12:05 don: that's hard coral... ledge areas... 230' ... steep, straight up and down...

LN: ooo, what's that? (tube sponge... 250' ... ) ...you really get an idea that it is a mountain, under the ocean... i'm completely bent over...and now at this point on the shelf, looks like a mountain... (all old coral...rocky, old sea bed...now let me turn around here...you can wipe port for visibility...terrain now is more rumble... lots of sand... ) ...

15:30 LN: not seeing many fish... (occasionally... solitary fish) ...sylvia could see that, i couldn't tell...you have the light on it now... ooo there's a fish, two fish, red, grayish look, color of coral...oh my gosh, i just realized how far down we're going, incredibly deep... exact opposite of climbing a mountain...

17:25 don: 470 feet ... 480 feet...

LN: are we pointed downward?

(radio stuff)

ln: now it's pretty dark down here isn't it? (yeah but if i shut the light off, you'll still be able to see¿ i'm angling down... ) ...big sponge... looks like snow on a mountain¿not much color down here... (transect line) ...don't even know how to describe, so eerie....blue, snow on sand... incredible slope further than the eye can see... i don't see as much as she can see... can you differentiate? (no, not below 450')...getting.. . close... (it's okay if we touch¿) yikes!!! ¿look at this field of crinoids! I wish Sylvia could have seen this ..... look at that, it's a shrimp) where where¿ oh I see it, it has purple feet!

25:30 (don: at 660') we're going to touch (bang) ... ooo! ... (beads of sweat-¿ on her forehead.) ...hah hah ... (completely black underneath... (cruise a little more, then ascend... even w/transect) ... looking down, completely black...

28:00 a little silver fish right at our level...all kinds of things growing here...surprised that i don't see more fish or eels... (too deep ...more like moonscape w/life to it...700') ... it is like moonscape...climbing up? (slowly yes ...

30:11 LN: how far down does ledge go? (6 thousand feet...tapers off... )

33:10 LN: starting to see more color now...what depth? 500' ... coral-colored rock... ooo what's that? funny looking...ooo beautiful fish like a big goldfish¿more fish now¿big fan¿look at this, this is fabulous, get close and see the variety¿purple fish, orange fan¿(tube sponges, white one on its side) ¿it looks like animals. hanging on side of the wall, corals? (sponge and algae... ) this is incredible... like being on underside of cave...this is incredible right here, the colors are amazing....pinks and yellows and oranges... like a wonderland¿ooo, see that fish there? spiny back...more tropical and colorful...more light? (yes, the key here... )

38:00 (don calls exuma hunter)

39:00 LN: color seems to come out more with the light...vibrant reds...bright yellow...two little chairs... (a sponge) ... incredible looking! ... the feeling of travelling thru a moonscape has diminished somewhat now, brighter, sense of the light... (110' down) ... looks like big forest...

41:30 75 feet, coming to surface...

41:45 LN: that was wonderful... (good) ... oops, we just came up! ...now we're
floating around... (warm on the surface)...now we can see the boat... see the top of the water and the sun coming thru...that's it, i'll have to come back! ... (yeah) ...amazing how blue this water is...that's great... thanks you, my first deep sea voyage¿great¿(engine off¿pressure release efx x2¿lid opens with creak¿)

(lynn gets out... a stretch of interior quiet sub here...then greg gets in sub at 51:40)

(the rest of the tape is greg in sub. use for bits of quiet interior with sub efx...too much chit-chat... esp last 2 minutes w/good thruster efx)
