LN = Lynn Neary
SE = Sylvia Earle

0:00 tape start

0:40 ln: sea is so expansive up here...what's it like for you... i'm having trouble believing a world like that exists down there.

1:05 se: just imagine standing on top of a high cliff, spreading your arms and flying.
(pause)

1:30 se: coming up on 250, below us, two enormous groupers looking at us ...that's the kind of experience that puts into perspective... it's their home, we're visitors...we human don't get to see this unless we go into this deep blue ocean where most of life occurs and the greatest diversity of life...sensation that i value most...most of what we see is from books..this is the real thing... i've just come back (on this dive) from a journey of the history of life on earth... exploring this planet, we know so little about it...space travel is important, but we need to spend more of our attention inward.

4:00 ln: how many species on coral reef?

4:40 se: diversity of life on reef...explosion of species...we're not very? good at determining what species are...

6:00 ln: well i can't wait to get down there sylvia.

6:10 se: i can't wait for you to see it... just about at 100' ...diver depth...you will soon see what it's like in this blue blue atmosphere.

6:45 brian: we're moving into position to pick you up.

se: do we have to?

brian: unfortunately, held short by apparatus.

se: i'm anxious for lynn to see what it's like...over.

7:40 (positioning instructions...boat starts...there's a small bit of boat-moving ambience here w/o talking.)

8: 30 (sub pulls alongside boat...mostly efx, no talking... "get i'm?.....then engine idles, then engine off...pressure pop of lid, lid opens ... )

9:50 don: ok here we are, back from the deep... let's get sylvia out... she doesn't want to come out...

se: excellent...when can we go again? ..

don: not many people get to see the dunes

se: you could slide right down them.

11:36 END
