DAT #4

WHY NO EAT LEMURS? YOU NEED THE WOOD, BUT YOU DON'T NEED THE LEMURS.

2:30 i don't think that people here look at it that way. especially here around the reserve, because it is a source of income for the community, tourism is a source of income, so we believe the lemurs must be protected as well.

HEY, IS THERE A WORD FOR BIODIVERSITY IN MALAGASY? KNOW WHAT IT MEANS?

(he says that they know the names of everything...doesn't answer the question, harry says they don't have a word for it)

WILL FOREST LAST FOREVER?

i am sure that it will last forever, because we protect it, especially the national reserve and the national park.

SOME PEOPLE THINK FOREST IN MADAGASCAR IS GOING TO BE CUT DOWN

this is not fair, and we consider it a taboo. this should never be done.

track 7
19:20 rain.. lots. 20:17 first nice rolling thunder. i don't much like the rain, maybe because i remember that i'm sorta under shelter...but the rolling thunder at 20:14 is really really nice. 21:15 another really nice rolling thunder, with a great boom. 21:59 my favorite big and crisp and long and gooey (not gooey-just seeing if you're paying attention) 2407 nice roll... i guess it's all pretty good¿ in thru here. still more good rain at 25:30, tho this is the stuff with the generator in the gbackground that makes it a bit of a pain. i see what bill means about texture, though. the rain sounds more present as does the thunder
26:12 a really good thunder roll. got some frogs, too. 2800 is-real nice... thunder and frogs and birds and crickets and stuff. bill definitely right about all of this in here. 3013good thunder again... 3105 wicked big booms and a good roll and then some more stuff... IF WE CAN ROLL THE GENERATOR OUT OF THIS IT'S HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE REST. 33:00 Big fart.

track 10
34:00 NICE GENTLE MORNING AMBIENCE, FROGS, INSECTS, STUFF. good thru 3926

3926-this is really nice, much better than before, louder, fuller, harder rain. must be without pad. we like this one alot....... runs thru 4700

track 13 5031 quiet, distant, different, cicada type stuff.

track 14 strange bird? lemur? alien? on side of road . at 57:18 it's really strange, and we like it, thru 5810, then the truck comes by, which is interesting texture as well...that's at 5910 plus three quick seecons of decay. oops track 15

track17 indri, suspect it might be tape, distant, plus raindrops

track 18 11310 the indri, up close and personal...then a little distant, with raindrops annoyingly falling on mic, but great indri texture cuz they're both just going back and forth. this lasts thru 11510
THIS PRECEEDING ALL VERY GOOD. TRACK 18 12200 STRAIGHT UP, single indri call, then then far away/tape? stuff for a while, then at 12257 PAYDIRT they go at it hot and heavy thru 12355, then jungle sound for another twenty seconds or so and that's it.
19 15525 voices and cows mooing...nice... lasts for about thirty seconds before alex breathes allover it. .

track 20 1637 we've come running thru the woods about a kilometer or so, we've come to a little farm place...they make charcoal here, the farmers do. there are two plank shacks here... a kid who looks about fourteen or fifteen holding a baby.. hers probably. take two 127:17 we've come running thru the woods maybe a kilometer.. there are some cows and chickens around here, and some kids, one of whom looks to be about fourteen or fifteen years old, and she's holding a baby...hers maybe. there's another house with some people in it... and inside the back of this shed a guy's making charcoal... 12801 (with walking) take three: We've come about a kilometer thru the woods ...we're here in a kind of little farm place, a couple of plank buildings, some cows, some chickens and some kids and in back here, back up in the woods, there's a place where they're making charcoal. (more walking, then some running...usable if we must) three hundred yards down this path, we head off onto a trail thru the brush, a new trail...there's some kids in front of us with shovels, axes ... (more trampling) still

TRACK 20...with the charcoal makers 13010 WE'RE DOING A STORY ON THE RAIN FOREST AND ARE WONDERING WHAT HAPPENS TO THE WOOD HERE, AND MAURICE SAID WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO COME AND SEE A CHARCOAL OPERATION, WHICH WE'D LIKE TO SEE. SO CAN I ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUTYOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY. HOW MAN PEOPLE IN YOUR FAMILY. eight in the household. six children. AND WHAT DO YOU DO HERE?

We worked in the forest before to find timbers, but now it's very hard to find anymore now, so we are using eucalyptus.

THERE ARE SOME BIG TRUNKS IN THIS PILE. This is already damaged one. WHAT KIND?

it's euc.

SO ARE YOU MAKING CHARCHOAL HERE? WHY CAN'T YOU FIND THE BIG TREES ANYMORE?

it has been a long time that we have exploited the forest, so there aren't anymore left.

HOW OLD ARE YOU?

i think i am 53.

AND WHEN YOUNG MAN, WERE THERE MORE BIG TREES AROUND HERE?

13318 yes, there were, at that time. but this was the source of income for everyone at that time.

IS THIS CHARCOAL YOU'RE MAKING HERE TO SELL TO PEOPLE IN THECITY?

yeah, people from toama and tana.

HOW MUCH MAKE OFF THIS?

i sell one bag two thousand Malagasy francs. (one bag charcoal, five thousand francs)

HOW MUCH MOPNEY YOU MAKE FOR THIS?

13400 i sell one bag two thousand Malagasy francs.

HOW LONG TAKE MAKE A BAG OF CHARCOAL?

for this one, i will need about a week. before it would have needed only four or five days, but because it's wet i need more than a week, and for this one i can get only five bags.

SO THIS PILE OF WOOD GOT HERE-YOU GET FIVE BAGS OF CHARCOAL FOR A WEEK, THATS 10,000 MALAGASH FRANCS.

exactly. the price keeps going down. people are suggesting a lower price, like 1500 francs, and that's not fair at all.

WE'RE HERE CUZ CONF. IN TANA ON THE FOREST AND LIFE INN THE FOREST. PEOPLE ALL OVER WORLD KNOW ABOUT LIFE IN MADAGASCAR, AND PLANTS YOU HAVE HERE. SCIENTISTS ALL OVE RTHE WORLD SAY WE SHOULD SAVE THE FOREST OF MADAGASCAR. DO YOU HEAR ABOUT SAVING THE FOREST MADAGASCAR?

13710 yes, we've heard it on the radio.

AND WHAT DO YOOU THINK . ABOUT THAT?

You know, this is our source of income, since we arrived here in 47. we worked for a company, and up to now we couldn't find another place to move to.

SO WHAT YOU THINK. ARE YOU BEING TAKEN CARE OF. ARE YOU BEING HELPED?

Not really. before there was a project with the world food program and we worked for a small airport for this area and we got food for work. but after that we didn't get anything.

DO PEOPLE EVER GO INTO FOREST AND CUT OLD BIG TREES

13928 I can't say. you know, i live a little bit far from the reserve (yeah, at least a couple hundred feet) and i cannot tell if people are really going into it.

DO YOU HEAR ABOUT IT?

i can't tell, really int my day here, and those people are stealing, so they're hiding when they do it.

BUT PEOLE ARE STILLING FROM THE RESERVE?

14012 i don't know. maybe. i never go into the reserve myself. 14100 if we get more help from overseas or from the government we're not going to do any more forest exploitation. we need some projects done here at the peoples level. yeah, and you know, there was a conflict here before between the world food program and the government.. the forest department. you know, when we worked for reforestation and planted over three and i don't understand the reason, because we need trees. hectares with wfp, the government said we shouldn't do that, blah blah blah.

RAZAF TSALAMA.

TRACK 21 Nice cow at 14330. again at 14420... 14438 ...14709 ferocious bleat

14735 'nother good one. some grunting. some birds and stuff in background. not
too bad. 14830

14908 pounding the corn, complete with chicken clucking and cow in background
and the kid doing it breathing' hard and then her sifting it and the cow and all
sorts of great stuff. kids voices. this is all nice.

15025 great sifting. chickens clucking it up, cow again. more sifting, more
pounding, this stretch beginning at 15025 is better than the one that preceded
it.
track 23
15240 we're on the road about 3 or 4 miles from the reserve.

15254 we're on a roadway maybe about a mile from the reserve on the...we're
on the roadway from Antananarivo...we're about a mile from the reserve...there's
a rail line below, and up above us is a sharp cutaway cliff... it's forested on
top, i can see a fire up there, they're making charcoal, and across the valley
there's another fire over there, they're making charcoal over there too.

15325 there are people walking up and down the road. the pile of heavy blue
stone here they're working on road repair. there's a little sign that says go
slow but nobody does. up above there's a fire burning on the top of this
embankment here, and it's where they're making charcoal. there's another fire
over there, another one across the valley. the trees here are big euc trees,
they've been cut down and burned. you can see all along the top, there's just
little stubs sticking up of the trunks, and other places full grown trees.

15400 there's euc all across the valley. down below the rolling hills going
away, across the other side of the rail line, euc forests. along this line
of valley you can see that there's the old forest at the top of the hills just
across the valley there. and then coming toward us the eucalyptus that's been planted to replace it. we're on a road about a mile from the reserve, this is the main
road from Antananarivo. up above us there's an embankment along the side of the
road. it's cut away very sharply, and a lot of red earth down here on the road.
there's a fire going up there. someone's making charcoal. another fire about a
hundred feet away. another fire across the valley. a lot of people making
charcoal here. (some truck sound) there are three trucks coming down the road.
they look like charcoal trucks. there's a lot of them going by here. this is
the main road from Antananarivo. we're about a mile from the park. there's a
big embankment beside us. there's fires going up there where people are making
charcoal. (trucks go by big, honk, qy by some more) the trucks are a empty...don't look like charcoal trucks...new Mercedes. new tarps. track 23 15630 guy comes whistling down the road. stops, starts up again, there's birds,. there's voices in the distance, guys who are working on the road, stuff like that. more whistling jack...bicycle goes by. 15815 another
truck goes by, or maybe just a big car.
