Madagascar
TAPE #3

Track 5, 13:05 lively stuff on both sides in the market. not bad. the problem, which i think can be overcome, is the uneven balance, a problem bill said was created back at the hotel, some strange ms encoding stuff. anyway...potential.
track 6-as explained by bill. pretty, lyrical, but some peak distortion.
track 8-same song except in studio. usable, the caveat being that ms problem.
18:50-20:48
track 9 21:40-23:20 very nice little song by the kids
track 10 24:04 short and very sweet to 24:20 they're going to try again...
25:06-25:50 nice. short. where was the drum?
26:27-27:15 short, sweet with drum.
track 11 27:20 the big group, with one of their tunes warms up, stops, talks,
27:58 starts again with drum...at 28:206-33:19 crank up the level on the right channel to make it better. don't know if it does, but sure sounds better.
track12 33:20-the violin and drum and vocal song--some clipping, unfortunately. lots of clipping, actually. (WHY DOES IT CLIP AT 24-THAT'S MUCH LOWER THAN THE SAFETY ZONE. I DON'T GET IT. TRACK 13 36:59 TRUCK PASSES BY RIGHT TO LEFT...then another, same thing...then lots of ambience, then a cart gets pulled by, then more sorta quiet street ~ ambience, then a little laughter, then more pulling of cart...a little bag; noise (fuck) ... 38:56 truck just sorta takes over.... goes away at 39:49... 40:22 \1 starts tacking wood, throwing it from cart into backyard...truck goes -1, by...41:18 donkey or ox not behaving...more, good stacking of kindling wood...sounds nice, crisp...car goes by...more stacking, still good... 44:00 guys talking back and forth as they unload, then GREAT stacking/throwing whatever of wood 45:31 truck comes into picture... (same truck that's filled with bags of charcoal)46:00 where do you get the wood? from around here.

DOES HE CUT IT?

other people cut it, they transport it to village.

VILLAGE IS CALLED AMBATALONA.

firewood about two inches in diameter.
track 15 49:24 trickling water, on road to perinet. lots
track 16 55ish walking thru forest. footsteps. not very good.
Track 17 more walking...not great either. 57:30 some peepers. some rain. some birds. some frogs. all pretty boring
Track 18 1:00:00 walking thru wet stuff with frogs in background.1:00:56 frogs. good frogs thru 101:55 more frogs at 1:02:40.at 1:03:40 we got lots and lots of good frogs and other things which sound real good together. lasts for a good minute and a half. 1:05:53 pad off. good stuff. lots of crickets and frogs and raindrops and everything else. much more present than what preceded it. rain hitting the leaves is nice, too.
track 19 walking. not great
1:09:20 rain. frogs. and screeching brown lemurs. just once on the lemurs, tho.
track 20 1:13:39 rain. lots. heavy.
track 21 1:14:00 rain. heavy. not as loud as previous, but sustained and cleaner in terms of handling noise, other crap. then again, it could simply sound like whitenoise to another ear. you make the call. 1:15:10 starts clean again... expecting thunder any minute now... comes gently at 1:16:00...not bad...more rain. i feel like i'm getting real wet (i think this was about the time little mr. mosquito was plotting my demise)really nice and long, tho. big thunder at 1:19:10
1:20:15 i set another level and try some more. it still sounds good.12146 rolling thunder12258 more nice thunder
track 22 lots of walking and dripping and talking and stuff going to the head villagers place. then we enter the place, with door opening. then lots of to and fro ...
track 23 1:40:54 things shouldn't be decided just at a bureaucratic or conference level. decision making people should see reality on the ground, at a grass roots level. (he's elaborating on his theme of sometimes the government just decides to do something without knowing shit about what's going on)

DOES GOVERNMENT AND DONORS HELP THE FOREST AND THE PEOPLE, OR MORE INTERESTED IN JUST THE FOREST YOU THINK?

At this moment we can say that there have been some good decisions, but it would be even more helpful if they would implement those decisions.

WHAT DO YOU WANT SEE HAPPEN?? THIS VILLAGE

we had five day conference among ourselves to decide what kind of priorities we have, and first of these was cooperative that farmers would organize among themselves, and also a rice granary where farmers would store the harvest of one year and not sell them all at once.

DO GOVT AND DONORS COME AND TRY TEACH PEOPLE SAVE FOREST, PTOTECT FOREST

1:44:29 Yes, they do help a lot, because they have sent technicians to help us in farming and breeding different types of cows and poultry and different varieties of crops, and this help very useful.

BUT DON'T PEOPLE STILL NEED CUT WOOD FOR FUEL

14624 Yes, because this is the only source of income. but from now on we have to get permits, even if we want to clear a small piece of forest. this is the only way we can get money as we don't grow any rice or other crops

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO

at our conference we decided we were ready to learn new methods of farming, of growing rice, but for this to happen we need the help of technicians to come and show us how to do this.

DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE GOING TO CHANGE THE LIFE OF YOUR PEOPLE JUST TO SAVE THE FOREST-IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO.

yes, i've been asked this question already, a number of times, and as chief of village, i always repeat that this is the only way we can get out of this situation.

YEAH, BUT YOU'RE"I:HE CHIEF, AND MOST PEOPLE NO:" . LIKE CHANGE

this would be possible if there were concrete solutions, otherwise"> it will be very difficult for people to accept change. It's very hard for me if people don't see concrete things happening. It's really hard because I'm' in charge of the life for the whole community, not only on development matters, but on social matters. if there is something happening, 'good things and bad things, death and birth, i am in charge of uniting the community.

WHAT YOU TELL VILLAGERS THEY GET OUT OF THIS? WHAT YOU TELL THEM AS REASON FOR WHY THIS IS GOOD FOR VILLAGE?

15400 it's not an easy job, because people ,just watch first to see what happens. they do not want to give up the traditional method. we need help....blah blah

LOOK, WHAT I WAANNA KNOW IS, WHAT VILLAGE GET OUT OF IT?

Generally. we want a better life and one example of this is drinkable water in this village. because up til now we are using water from polluted well.

NAME IS PUTIMYANA, CHIEF OF VILLAGE ANDASIBE BEEN LIVING IN VILLAGE 60 YEARS.
