DAT #5

Wednesday -7 a.m.
End of El Encanto ambi. Then picks up with early morning walk with Ted Parker (TP) on roads near Los Fierros camp, first in broken rainforest area and later out to the grassland
"cerrado" area about a mile from Los Fierros.
El Encanto Ambi. with single bird/frog?
Bat in the mist net -no sound
New Scene -next morning -4:47 a.m. on road near Los Fierros with Ted trying playback...hear rooster in far distance from camp
TP: identifies pauraque
LOTS of good quiet morning ambi here¿. (TP mutters ids. )
Ted playback -gets response
**** (24:50) "This is an important time of the day for me because there are only a few number of birds that sing at first light¿. ids¿. won't sing again until dusk. Have to be really alert¿. like looking at the horizon instead of what's in front of you. Concentrate on sounds that are as far away as can hear.
FX: walking on -mike bumps though
TP logs his observations quietly into his recorder.-Latin names and where recorded.

This is the time when I learn a lot¿. puff birds ¿. never heard that type of species before (talks very quietly) TP -records antbirds everywhere he goes -reflects genetic variations......playback to lure gray antbird.
A lot of the people when get to rainforest want to walk right in the middle. But this is good for me. Here this is great tall forest. Can hear forest interior birds.
FX: walking
Last year there was a jaguar walking up and down this section of the road¿. saw tracks and him one day¿.
owl butterfly
As long as there are no people, when road is cut through, vegetation will start growing back.
42:50 ***** Walking, hear birds in the woods, TP: male blackish antbird just flew across the road in response
(Playback). Louder ambi.
****** TP: This should be a nice sound, mustached wren, male/female duet singing after I play this back¿. FX: birds sing. That's an antiphonal duet where male and female singing different songs. They're perched side by side. have to be close to sing as though the same. Territorial display. They want to defend their food supply -insects. have probably been here for years. They're trying to find the intruders. Now they're separated by 10 meters and you can hear that the duet isn't synchronized. Now not able to see one another or hear the cue that the male gives.
(Note: find the part of the interview with Ted in Washington where Ted talks re. territory to be defended)
Now they're synchronized -back together.
(Note: Greg might be interested in this)
more close antbird duet vocalizations -playbacks
TP describes mustache wren
cicadas loud
still hear good ambi

AC: common for you to hear something that seems new? TP: not anymore. sometimes weeks or months go by and I don't hear any new song. When I can hear a new song and get a recording of it¿. that's a great day ¿. happens a few times every month long trip.
FX: good walking
TP: could be a jaguar track
loud cicadas under walking
TP: This is a real classic sound of the rainforest¿. Let's see if we can get this playback to lure them
in¿rooster in background
FX: more playback....parrots
Lots of playbacks, listening and waiting...good flies
@1:10:30
-favorite parrots...in Mexico this bird is almost extinct because of mustache wren.
FX: Truck door slams -fast walking
FX: rooster
TP: these are scarlet macaws
FX: good walking -fast pace -loud -open door, slam
but then the tape stops!
could mix in truck starting up sounds. truck passes by -good stereo -all open car doors -(need to close
them!) Truck starts up...¿ (tape stops again!
New Scene: FX: walking on the cerrado -along dirt road in grassland¿. some wind noise¿. flies¿. walking on, birds chirping. (note: good for change of scene: TP: playback (LOUD) Can hear instant calls of chirping birds nearby -tanagers -good stereo. This is the only tanager that duets...very territorial, I can get them to come back and land..... (Good little clip of sound re. how Ted can manipulate birds to do what he wants....different bird sound than others we have heard) They think there's another bird -will actually fight another bird. When I hear this pair, can hear others off in the distance.
TP tries to lure in grassland sparrow -flies shock mount
noise Ted playback of bees and tanagers¿. birds
respond¿. good
FX: walking +++ Masses of QUIET ambi here
