NOTES: "20Hz shorts" [MLNS notes: 20Hz shorts are identified as Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) according to reference: Thompson, Paul O. and William A. Friedl, 1982, "A long-term study of low-frequency sounds from several species of whales off Oahu, Hawaii. Cetology 45: September 30, 1982. Equipment notes from this reference indicate "two hydrophones, 11.6km apart and bottom-mounted at 400 fathoms off the northernmost point of Oahu... Hydrophone response was essentially flat from 20 to 300Hz and was attenuated at about 15dB per octave above." Reel side 2 covers dates from 2 Oct through 5 Oct1979; it was not possible to determine on exactly which date this recording was made, although this excerpt was taken from the first half of Side 2. 15-20Hz upsweeps, of which this was the best segment, occur approximately every 25-40 seconds apart, and may be seen on the spectrogram. Presumed humpback whale may be occasionally heard in the background. Sounds above 1kHz filtered out using Krohn-Hite model 3382 filter, due to parasitic machine noise from running at 2.38cm/s. 17Jun2005 CB] SEAOCEAN
