NOTES: In response to playback could hear the bird walking toward us, jumped up on some ferns, then into small brush 10-12 feet off ground on fairly steep slope in forest. Forest is being cut but there is still alot of thick vegetation and large trees, as it moved higher it gave all these vocalizations. There is also a funny mechanical noise that might be wing noise given several times when moving between trees. Seen alone, usually seen alone or with one other individual, not in flocks. May be split, I think it is a different race than in Thailand. HPF@180-SBA 21/11/02. Response to playback: Approach. Response to playback: Normal song. Response to playback: Different song. ML: Subject changed from Garrulax merulinus to Garrulax annamensis to reflect current taxonomy. Andrew Spencer, 6Mar2023.
