Serranía Cuchilla is one of 7 serranías inside Pilón Lajas Biosphere Reserve. It is 10 km from Serranía Pilón the richest serranía in the reserve and also the first of the Eastern Andean foothills. These recordings are from a base camp of 900 m, and probably going no lower than 750 m, all tropical forest peaking at 900 to 1000m, steap edged, well drained soils, but not a fully old growth as the soils and slopes cannot support truly large trees. High forest turnover and the area has been selectively logged for two large tree species.
