Observation details
The mega rarity found by Sam Galick earlier this afternoon. Congrats Sam! First NJ record! I only had the bird for three minutes or so. The whole flock flew and most of the birds didn't return. Here is my best pic. The bird did show a slight upturn to the bill. This pic isn't showing that well. Maybe because the head is turned. The structure of the bird is like a Greater Yellowlegs. Size and shape. I did not see the bird in flight. Others did and got pics of the white wedge up the back. The paleness of the bird stood out. Again, this pic isn't showing that well. It's an adult in basic plumage. The pic does show the rounder scaps and coverts. A juvenile would have more pointed scaps and coverts. Although being in basic plumage now - maybe it's a non breeding bird - a first - year bird. I wonder if the hurricane that hit the eastern atlantic had anything to do with the bird here?
