Observation details
In a steep, rocky south facing slope on the elwha trail about a half mile west of the paved trail to Hurricane Hill. Michael Barry had photos of a bird from earlier in the day that we now think is this one. The bird I saw was perched on a rock for some time. I noted the dark brown tail and orange-ish belly and suspected Says phoebe. It moved to the top of a snag and began flycatching for close to 20 minutes. I was able to get close enough for photos. It regularly wagged its tail by dropping it and spreading the all dark tail feathers. The back was light gray-brown and the only marking was light edging on the flight feathers, the bill was black. The crown was browner and the face was darker brown than the cap. Never called. When I left it had flown upslope and was perched closer to the trail.
