Least Flycatcher. Photo taken by Kevin Lucas. Bird found in open pine forest near a wet drainage area.
Observation details
Loud 'Che-bek' call alerted me to its presence. Found bird foraging in open ponderosa pine understory next to wet drainage area with deciduous growth. Bird very active and easy to see. When bird was flying from perch to perch, it would make a high pitch trill just after landing with exaggerated wing fluttering. All vocalizations were very different from the numerous Gray Flycatchers also calling in this area. Also, the bird did not display the tail dipping of a Gray Flycatcher. This is the 3rd time I have detected a Least Flycatcher in open pine forest near deciduous growth in the Wenas Valley. Kevin Lucas went back out later in the day and refound the bird to get pictures and audio to document. Thanks, Kevin!!
