Observation details
Second time I have encountered this species in the county, the first time being this same week of May in 2015 only about 0.3 mi west of Cherry Valley Lake. An adult with cherry red head, black upperparts with broad white secondaries. White underparts. Habitat is certainly suitable for breeding, though I wonder if competition from more abundant "Melanerpes" (i.e. Lewis's Woodpeckers) prevents colonization of this portion of river by Red-headeds.
