Media notes
Lesser Yellowlegs, Crosbyton City Park, Crosby County, Texas, 19 February 2017.
Observation details
One - at far end of Crosbyton City Park Playa - in company of Killdeers. Roughly Killdeer sized (as best as could be judged - birds were keeping their distance) and seemed dainty in comparison. It had bright yellow legs - which none of my pictures showed well. The attached photograph shows a relatively short and slender bill with no perceptible, to me, upturning. By short I mean that the bill is scarce, if at all, longer than the head width. Size and shape, in comparison to Killdeer, and bill size and shape led me to believe that this is a Lesser Yellowlegs. There has been no sign of the bird at this site earlier in the winter and this bird could be part of a wave of somewhat early migrants we are currently experiencing in what has barely been a winter at all.
